The Protestant parish church of Griedel is usually kept locked, but as I had contacted the parish office before, I knew where to find a keyholder, so we were able to see the interior as well. The following description is taken from the website “Denkmalpflege Hessen”: Round chancel tower probably from the 2nd half of the 14th century, which originally also had to fulfil defensive functions for the inhabitants of Griedel; the current spire dates back to a reconstruction in 1830. The historic nave was so dilapidated at the beginning of the 20th century that demolition was unavoidable. A new building was inaugurated in 1911, designed by Heinrich Walbe as the responsible monument conservator for the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. With the construction of a nave and a south aisle, Walbe orientated himself on the proportions of the demolished parts of the building, but exceeded their dimensions. The new side aisle is accentuated on the outside by two transverse gables. Inside, the nave has a boarded wooden barrel vault. The tie beams of the roof are each supported once in the centre by a hanging post. There are galleries on the north and west sides of the nave and above the side aisle, and a higher gallery on the east side of the nave to provide access to the upper tower storeys. The former chancel on the ground floor of the tower has a ribbed vault over consoles; the most valuable piece of equipment is a late Gothic sacrament niche with the coat of arms of the Griedel landlords from the House of Eppstein. An ogival door led to a tower extension on the north side, which no longer exists and probably served as a sacristy.
