Visiting Impekoven St. Mariä Heimsuchung

The current church building is already the third church in Impekoven. A neo-Gothic chapel stood on the same site for 83 years. It was built in 1884, extended in 1926 and demolished in 1967 because it had become too small for the rapidly growing congregation. The first place of worship, probably a half-timbered chapel, stood at the beginning of Steingasse, was first mentioned in documents in 1826 and demolished in 1889. According to tradition, it is said to have stood there as early as 1650. The foundation stone of today’s ‘concrete church’ was laid on 14 July 1968, when the shell of the building was already complete. This church was designed by Cologne-based Prof. Dr. Gottfried Böhm as a ‘crystal-clear monolith’, i.e. a structure made from a single piece, comparable to a rock crystal. Many churchgoers also see the design as a ‘castle of God’ or the ‘tent of God’. After the Second Vatican Council and the liturgical reform, the congregation of believers moved more into the foreground. With this new objective in mind, architects were then allowed to design churches and move away from the previous requirement for a cruciform floor plan. Accordingly, the interior of the Impekoven church was designed as a meeting place where the priest can celebrate the Eucharist facing the congregation. The Christmas Mass in 1969 was the first Holy Mass held in the new church with Pastor Wilhelm Werner.

The altar cross also forms a link to the previous chapel: it contains the corpus of the old altar cross. The altar table and tabernacle are made of red sandstone from Würzburg and were crafted by Albert Wirths from Geroldshausen. In 2006, a new ambo was blessed by Pastor Georg Theisen and put into service. It is made of the same material as the altar table, thus forming a unified whole. Hermann Büchel, a sculptor and stonemason from Impekoven, designed the ambo as well as the holy water fonts to the right and left of the entrance door and the baptismal font. The Madonna figure, a private donation, was probably created in France (or Spain) at the beginning of the 17th century. It is a rare representation of the enthroned Mother of God with the baby Jesus on her lap and the dove on her arm.
