Visiting Schildgen Herz Jesu
Today’s Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Schildgen was built in 1960 by the architect Gottfried Böhm. The building is based on a previous building from 1929, which was designed as a basilica and had a two-tower west building that was dismantled in the course of the reconstruction in 1960. The new church was built to the south-west of the original church building along Altenberger-Dom-Straße. Part of the previous building was integrated and now serves as a parish hall. The Herz-Jesu-Kirche faces inwards and the entire church area is shielded from the street by a five metre high wall. The appearance of the building is characterised by the six towers of different heights with pointed spires. The smallest tower is set on top of the wall and marks the entrance portal. The five internal towers are staggered in height and mark the sacred areas of the church. The highest tower is located above the altar. The church hall is divided into four naves by thin cast-iron pillars. The entire church building was originally constructed entirely in exposed concrete. The uniform use of materials was changed in 1987 in the course of renovation work, as the spires, which were originally also made of exposed concrete, were covered with lead covers.
